Installing an Updated Direct Draw Driver for your PCI VGA board

Step 1. Download the latest set of Updated Direct Draw drivers for tested VGA cards

If you have an S3 VGA chip, or are using the Matrox Millenium, Mystique, the Cirrus Logi 5446 or one of the ATI Mach64 or Rage 2 chips, using your Internet Web browser, click on VGA Driver Updates for Direct Draw.

If you have a VGA which has recently been tested with a Direct Draw driver, you will find it listed separately:

Step 2. Unzip the VGA Updated Driver to a temporary directory

The VGA Updated Driver file is compressed using an industry standard compressor called PKZIP. It can be unzipped using PKUNZIP or any other program which can unzip files of the type ZIP.

Though you can unzip the driver to a diskette, it is easier to install the VGA Updated Driver file if you UNZIP it into a temporary directory.

Lets say, for example, that you have downloaded the VGA Updated Driver disk to your C:\ directory. Then you can go to a DOS command prompt and type:

PKUNZIP VGA_DRIV.ZIP C:\TEMP -D

Make sure the -D option is at the end of the command line, so that the directory structure of the VGA Updated Driver will be preserved.

Step 3. Install an updated VGA driver

Click on the Start button, then Settings/ControlPanel

Double click on Display, then click on the Settings tab.

Windows 95 will go to the PCI bus and look for the "signature" of the VGA card installed in your PC. Then it will look in the temporary directory for VGA cards which match this signature. If you leave the button Show compatible devices checked, you will now see a list of the updated drivers which are compatible with your VGA card. For example, if you have an S3 Trio32/64 card, click on the name to select this device then click on OK:

After the new VGA driver files are copied to your hard disk, you should click on Close, and then Apply.

At this point you will be asked if you want to reboot your computer. Click on Yes to reboot and have the new drivers take effect.
