General WINTV-D and Digital broadcast Info:

The WinTV-D board accepts both standard Analog broadcasts, as well
as HDTV signals. The HDTV signals are downsized to 480i interlaced.

480i is a so-called "standard definition" digital format.
1080i is one of the "high definition" digital formats.
There are 18 allowed formats in all
for more background, there is a white paper on our web site.

The WinTV-D converts all 18 formats to 480i so they can be easily
moved across the PCI bus in your PC over to your graphics card for
display on your PC monitor. It is also easy and convenient for us to
convert the 480i to S-Video, so you can see the show on an existing
large-screen analog TV.

Since digital television in the US is available only by terrestrial broadcast, you will need an antenna. If you are close to the transmitters, a small indoor antenna may suffice, further away and you'll need a roof-top. There is no service to buy, since digital television in the US is free. The WinTV-D includes all the receiver circuitry needed. All you provide is an antenna and a cable to get the signal down to the WinTV-D.

Setting up channels:

There are 2 RF connectors on the Wintv-D board. One for your existing cable TV line (for analog broadcasts), and one for HDTV digital broadcasts(antenna). When scanning for channels, your Tuner 1 and Tuner 2 will scan separately. Assuming you choose tuner 1 as your analog signal- setup the configuration for your area(For example: channels by country, CABLE, NTSC-M, MN, and United States), and
allow the auto-scan to run. Once the channels are found, you will scan for Tuner 2. Tuner 2, representing the HDTV broadcasts in this case, be sure to set the Tuner format to DTV-ATSC, and the Broadcast/Cable section for ANTENNA. When scanning- you should now be able to pick up any digital broadcasts in your terrestrial area.

A black screen on Digital channels only?

Tune into the digital station, hold the CTRL key, and
click the right mouse button over the wintv window. From the menu, choose Diagnostics.
When on a digital channel, The I2C indicator should show "I2C FOUND". The "sync lock" and "eq lock" will show a "locked" signal if the broadcast is being picked up correctly. Try moving the antenna, very slowly, in different directions, until the signal shows a locked status for both indicators. Analog channels will display "analog" for both the Sync Lock and Eq Lock.

Using the S-VHS output on the board:

The S-Video output on the board allows you to send decoded digital channels to an existing large-screen analog television that you may own. The actual signal that is getting output is an analog S-video signal(not HDTV), which is transmitted at 480i, and comparable to DSS receivers
or DVD. It only outputs the digital channels, so you still use your existing large-screen television's own tuner for analog stations.
There is no S-Video INPUT on the wintv-D, however, there is a standard Composite Video Input(RCA), so you can connect a VCR or video camera to the board.

The adapter provided with the board, which converts S-VHS out to Composite out, will allow you to output the signal to a composite input on an external TV monitor, however, the video quality will not be as good as S-VHS.

I am getting black and white video output only, when using the S-VHS to composite output adapter on the external TV monitor:

Go to start-programs-Hauppauge Wintv and click the S-Video OFF(reg file) this will turn off S-Video, and allow you to output color composite. Click the S-Video ON in the same directory, to re-enable S-VHS as the output.

Changing the appearance of the Digital broadcast:

Hold CTRL and click the right mouse button over the Video. From the menu, choose Diagnostics. The section labled "aspect ratio" allows you to choose 16X9 aspect ratio, or 4X3. Additionally, when in 4X3 aspect ratio, you can also select different modes: Pan scan, no conversion, or Letterbox. Pan scan gives you the middle 4X3 section of the 16X9 broadcast.

Connecting the WINTV to the soundcard:

The WINTV-D has a built in AC-3 decoder for audio. It normally connects from the line out on the wintv to the line in on the existing soundcard. You can connect existing PC speakers directly,
or connect it to an exisiting home entertainment system as another option.
Analog broadcasts will be DBX stereo, not surround sound.

Under configure-audio(wintv32, or AUD in wintv2000), you can select the Advanced Audio menu for Digital channels. Here, you can setup the sound as desired: 2 Speaker mode- left and right, with the option for Pro Logic Mode, and/or Virtual Dolby audio. 3 Speaker mode- left, right, and center. 3 speaker mode- left, right, and surround sound, or 4/5
speaker mode- for left, right, center, and surround sound speaker configurations. Advanced audio options are not accessable with the Analog broadcasts.

Can I capture still frames or motion video clips with the WINTV-D?

Yes- you can capture still images(up to 1600 X 1200 resolution), and capture motion video clips in .AVI format(320 X 240 max.) with the WINTV-D board, the same as with our other WINTV PCI products. These features apply to both Analog and digital images that are being displayed through the WINTV-D.

Can I play DVD's through my PC's DVD player and interface them with the WINTV-D board?

There is no DVD encoder on the Wintv-D board- so it does not interface directly with an existing DVD encoder -neither with hardware or software. An external DVD player(deck) can be connected with Composite video out(RCA) to the WINTV-D's composite video input.

Can I use WEBTV with the WINTV-D board?

No, there are no WDM drivers for the WINTV-D.

What operating systems can I use the WinTV -D on?

The WinTV-D model will work with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0, and 2000 operating systems.

WINTV-HD FAQ

What Operating Systems can I use the WinTV-HD board on?

The WinTV-HD board can be installed on Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.

Installation Error: "Error 69":

1. Half way through the Add New Hardware Wizard , you might be asked to insert your original Windows Operating System CD ROM. Do so and hit OK. Note: you do not have to use the same Windows installation CD Rom, but you have to use the same version of WIndows which was originally install on your PC.
2. You will be asked to select your CD ROM drive. A number of files will be copied to your Hard disk.
3. After these files are copied to your hard disk, an error will occur. Error code 69. Click Finish
4. Open Device Manager by right clicking on the MY COMPUTER icon and click on Properties. Open Other PCI card and click on Prperties and then click on Reinstall Driver. When asked for the Windows 98 CD, DO NOT INSERT THE WINDOWS CD, but instead, leave the Hauppauge WinTV HD Installation CD ROM in your CD ROM drive. Click OK then Skip file several times until finished

Recommended procedure for viewing full screen TV mode:

Click the "rabbit ears" icon(TV Mode Icon)in the WinTV 2000 application to view full screen TV. It is not recommended to stretch the window with the mouse, as by doing this, the clarity of the picture will not be adequate. This is because even though it is full screen, the video is transferring over PCI with the VGA card doing the upscaling. Using the TV mode icon allows the Decoder chip on the WinTV board to do the upconverting and then drives the screen itself- resulting in a sharper picture.

Can I capture video with the WinTV-HD board?:

Yes, with the latest updated software, you may capture HD broadcasts and save them to the harddisk. The files are saved to a transport stream format(.trp) and you can play back a recorded HDTV show within a window from the hard drive.

Can I view Multicasting with the WinTV-HD board?

Yes, run the UsemulticastPSIP.reg file from the WinTV CD rom, which is located in the DTV folder. Once activated, open the WinTV application and right click on the channel number inside the WinTV display, and the choices should appear.
